Description
Also known as a 'non-reflux' valve or a 'Cardiff' valve in some cases. Small plastic device with luer connections on opposite sides. Device may possess a valve handle on the top (changes the direction in which it is active) whereas non-return valves without rotating handles are in a fixed orientation.
Key areas where used
- Theatre
- ITU/HDU
- Coronary Care
Method of use
A non-return valve can be placed on a gravity set when a pumped giving set is also being infused into the same infusion line. In the event of an occlusion, the closure of the non-return valve prevents reflux of fluid into the gravity giving set and the potential for the patient to receive a bolus as a result of this. The same is true if a blood pressure cuff and infusion set has to be used on the same side of a patient.
