Key areas where used
- Ward
Method of use
Filled with patient blood via the needle on the donor tube. It is possible to carry out post-donation sampling of blood via the Y site on the tube. Empty blood packs should be distinguished from blood packs containing various clot-preventing agents which allow blood to be transfused at a later stage. Empty blood packs referred to on this datacard consist of dry plastic and are used primarily for the removal and subsequent disposal of blood or for the production of serum. Regular blood removal is required for patients with specific blood conditions such as hemachromatosis and polycythaemia and the blood is then disposed of. Therefore, although these empty blood packs posses ports, it is very unlikely that they would ever be used for transfusion purposes.
