Key areas where used
- Labour wards
Method of use
For continuous foetal heart rate monitoring. Theelectrode is placed on the baby's scalp as soon as the head is exposedthrough the cervix at the first stages of labour. With the spiralelectrode, the rotating hub is turned when the electrode is inposition and the sharp wire at the proximal end rotates and passesinto the skin of the scalp. The wires at the end of the device areplaced into a leg plate and transducer which make contact with themother's skin. The signal is then fed through leads to acardiograph monitor.
Please note: This type of electrode tends to only be usedin special cases as a 'doppler' is usually sufficient to pick up thebaby's heartbeat through the mother's abdomen.
