PT029 - Uro-tainer polihexanide for patients with encrusted long-term urinary catheters

The EBPB were asked to look at the evidence for the use of Uro-tainer polihexanide (UT-P) for patients with encrusted long-term urinary catheters

Following consideration of the published evidence by the Evidence Based Procurement Board’s (EBPB) Evidence Research Group (ERG) in their Evidence Review for Uro-tainer polihexanide, the EBPB considers there is currently insufficient evidence to support its use in the Welsh NHS. In addition, the EBPB noted the concerning adverse event rates when using Uro-tainer polihexanide.

The EBPB therefore makes the following recommendation:

  1. Welsh Health Boards and Trusts should refrain from using Uro-tainer polihexanide until better quality evidence is available on the clinical efficacy, preferably through randomised controlled trials or sufficiently powered comparative studies with appropriate length of follow-up.

The EBPB Evidence Review Group (ERG) have issued an Evidence Review (available as a PDF download) and the EBPB have issued an Advice Statement (available as a PDF download).
